The music
magazine Q has used well known singer Lana Del Rey as their cover
star, thus appealing to a younger audience, and to reach out to the
followers Q magazine already has. Whilst sticking to the regular
colours of Q magazine red and white they use pink to highlight the
cover line making it clear to the reader who it is in the picture,
and what the main feature will be in that issue. The colour pink and
the tiara suggests a girly image that links to Lana Del Rey but
contrasts to the red blood running down the side of her face showing
a more edgy side to her which links to her music.
The main image of Lana is a medium close-up using direct address her gaze is as she looks at the camera casual and laid back this may also give us an insight into her music style and her personality. Also an added image is the Q magazine logo a signature we immediately associate with it, and this also brings to mind the other forms of media Q has for example the very well known music channel.
The strapline 'So whats so bloody good?' indicates what the article may be about and intrigues us as readers, we want too know what is good about Lana? The cover also shows other stories the article covers things there to entice the reader. For example the article the other story 'Fights! Feuds! Feathers! Kings of Leon fall apart.' The three alliterated words written in pink catch the eye of the reader so that fans of the band will be intrigued and want to read on.
Coverline 1 is attracting readers to another main story in side the magazine and adds the professor Green track as a sort of prize to the reader if they buy the magazine. The advertisements of different articles within the magazine show the variety that it has which is another selling point for many readers today.
The use of texts are what we are used to seeing on the front cover of this magazine and many others the block capitals are eye catching and and bold and the colours are simple but stand out on the page. The text used to write the name Lana Del Rey is girly and gives the idea that it has been drawn on with lipstick. This again shows the feminine side to the magazine's main story. But also contrast with the image which shows her in a different light, with the blood running down her face. The fact that she is wearing a white dress suggests innocence but along side the use of the red blood which we associate very much with danger offers something a little more edgy, which may then link us to what her music may be like and her personality.
The Promo used on this magazine cover '26 festivals to blow your mind' is appealing to the younger generation of readers that Q magazine has, its publication in February 2013 is showing upcoming festivals giving inspiration for young teens for the summer, which again helps to appeal to a specific audience. The bold colours yellow on black ensure that it is eye catching for the reader.
The front cover of Q magazine uses many of the different conventions of a typical Magazine front cover, all these add up to create a specific type to appeal to a specific fan base, whilst also using new ideas and branching out from the norms of that publication to ensure that more people enjoy reading Q magazine.
